Proving that there is no advantage to using a shipping container vs traditional construction as a structure to live in. Unless your need a Faraday cage, no windows, to block out G5.

In CA by the time the structural engineers are done with it the shipping container walls are really nothing more than glorified siding. All the materials needed for a wood framed structure are still required, the strength of the container walls are simply ignored.

it takes 4 to 5 days to apply the mud because you have to put on a few coats and sand down

Great video, great explanation , really good project …. But I don't think I will build using shipping containers.
It seems that you have to pay twice for everything ….. Once for the container then again for structural framing ,cladding and flooring.
I going with 2nd hand steel ibeam for a frame (1/4 cost of new) & concrete pier foundation.
I have already bought my steel…. Maybe I will post my project on YouTube for a comparison to your approach…
Good luck with your house, I think it will turn out quite nice.

This series has one lesson: building with shipping containers is a complete and utter waste of time.

All the fantasy about reusing shipping containers being a solution to affordable housing crisis etc is hogwash: the affordability crisis is ENTIRELY government-caused, by city building codes, and shipping container homes, being unconventional, only have a harder time with those. We could solve all homelessness in one second by streamlining and aggressively cutting back on building codes and onerous permit processes. But people keep voting for overbearing governments.

By the time you built in all of the 2×4 structure and reinforcement you were gaining nothing at all in savings from the strength of the shipping container itself. You would have been far better off with conventional wood-framed construction.

Thanks! Someone (hopefully author) needs to find a counter point critique (ie Alt viewpt) re the engineers/govt and the cost they add to real people's lives.
How much wind is needed to tip the box over? make the roof collapse and kill occupant? What odds are we protecting against?

A lot of those materials didn't exist in the 1970s, when I was young and now, too old and ill to do that kind of DIY.

Quick note: You can swap out welding ground clap, to a big magnet. Now you don't need extra metal hanging out to clap on. Or have that flat spot that can't be clamped on while welding…

I'm having a hard time finding windows from Jerry's kids telethon and doors from Home Depot with crooked errthang. The seals are all so straight and airtight. I decided to go with a good solid British door which can be forced open with 1 shoulder knock when Poirot comes.
